Ladli Laxmi Yojana is a flagship girl child welfare scheme launched by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2007 under the Department of Women and Child Development. The scheme aims to improve the status of the girl child in society by providing financial support for her education and marriage. It addresses the issue of declining child sex ratio and promotes education among girls in the state.
The scheme is applicable to girls born in Madhya Pradesh after January 1, 2006. The family should be permanent residents of MP. Parents annual income should not exceed Rs 1.5 lakh. The scheme covers families from all castes and communities. Maximum two girl children per family are covered.
Financial bonds of Rs 6,000 are purchased in the name of the girl child at birth. The bond matures when the girl turns 21 years, providing a lump sum amount of approximately Rs 1-2 lakh depending on the accumulated interest. Partial amounts can be withdrawn at various education milestones - Class 6, Class 9, Class 11 and Class 12 - to support education expenses. Additional benefits for girls who remain unmarried until 21 and complete their education.
The application is submitted at the time of birth registration at the local Janpad Panchayat or municipal corporation. Parents need to provide the birth certificate, residence proof and income certificate. The bond is issued in the girls name and managed by the district womens development office.
