Kanyashree Prakalpa WB Scheme
Conditional cash transfer scheme to keep girls in school and prevent child marriage. Provides annual scholarship and a one-time grant at age 18.
Kanyashree Prakalpa is a flagship girl child welfare scheme launched by the Government of West Bengal in 2013 under the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare. The scheme aims to improve the status of girls by providing conditional cash transfers to prevent child marriage and promote education. It has received international recognition including the United Nations Public Service Award.
Two Components
The scheme has two components: K1 provides an annual scholarship of Rs 1,000 to girls aged 13-18 who are unmarried and attending school. K2 provides a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 to girls on their 18th birthday who are unmarried and have completed certain education milestones. Both components encourage girls to stay in school and delay marriage.
Eligibility
Girls aged 13-18 years who are permanent residents of West Bengal are eligible. They must be unmarried and enrolled in educational institutions. Family income should be below Rs 1.2 lakh per year for K1 and Rs 1.5 lakh for K2. Regular attendance of at least 75% is required.
Benefits
K1 provides Rs 1,000 annual scholarship for school expenses. K2 provides Rs 25,000 one-time grant at age 18 for higher education or skill training. The scheme has benefited over 4 million girls in West Bengal and significantly reduced child marriage rates in the state.
